wagonEast of town as the foothills spill out onto the plains, one will find working farms and ranches, interspersed with rural residential housing. For people who want wide open views, the mesa tops and valleys east of Trinidad are ideal. The towns of Hoehne, Branson and Kim are east of Trinidad.

As one travels west from Trinidad along Highway 12, there are several small towns, each with its own unique qualities. First is Cokedale with its many old mining era homes, and the ruins of the coke ovens. Also along the route are Primero, Segundo and Weston. Once old coal mining towns, they now are the hub of activity for Coal Bed Methane extraction. Many mountain property developments lie along the county roads that snake up the canyons and ridge tops from these towns.

Walsenburg

Huerfano, (pronounced WAR-FA-NO), County is known as the land of “History, Mystery & Fascination. The towns of Walsenburg, La Veta and Cuchara form a semi circle arount the prominent landmark of the twin mountains, The Spanish Peaks. Many rural developments are scattered throughout the county, offering spectacular scenery and wide open spaces. The area boasts a wealth of recreational opportunities including some of the best fishing in the state. The San Isabel National Forest is south and west of Walsenburg, around the Spanish Peaks and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

La Veta & Cuchara

La Veta is situated on the eastern side of La Veta Pass through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. To the south of town is the foot of the West Spanish Peak and the eighteen hole, Tom Weiskopf designed Grandote Golf Course.

Cuchara, Colorado is situated on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the heart of the Cucharas River Valley. The town is surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest with all its' lakes, mountains and wilderness.

Opening the summer of 2007 in Trinidad is a spectacular, Jack Nicolas golf course at Cougar Canyon. The links course takes advantage of the beautiful natural landscape to both challenge and delight golfers of all abilities. Trinidad also has a 9 hole municiple course.

Grandote Golf Course in La Veta sits at the base of the Spanish Peaks with awesome views and their is a 9 hole Municipal Golf Course in Walsenburg, located next to Lathrop State Park
